UX DESIGN
Conscious Classroom
approach
I took over as Web & Graphic Designer in February of 2023.
It became clear very quickly to me that the website needed a complete overhaul. It was hard to navigate, the font sizing was inconsistent, and the color scheme did not reflect that of their other branding. There were actually 3 color schemes used on the website, so I needed to start fresh. Luckily the website was already set up in Wordpress, so I added the DIVI theme and went about a redesign from the ground up.
research
I conducted an audit of the current website in February of 2023.
In the audit, I also audited three of their main competitors: Breathe for Change, YogaEd, and CharacterStrong, got feedback about what they did and did not like about their current website, and outlined a plan and path forward staying on Wordpress, but switching to the DIVI Theme. I also included a wireframe redesign of their current homepage, and the structure and content needed for the rest of the website.
I then suggested a timeline to accomplish their goals.
design deliverables
> Iteration 1
-
For the online curriculum, at first I recreated the current content using WP posts. That way they could be searched once the user logged in, be designed using DIVI, and easily hidden from visitors not logged into the website.
-
I created a simple WP password protected page as a wall for purchased curriculum. I also created a store page using WooCommerce that would generate a new account, and login for any curriculum purchasing customers.
-
Also featured on the home page was a Call to Action for a free Breathwork Lesson so visitors could get a small peak at the curriculum. The Call to Action button directed Mailchimp to catch their email address, and send them a link and sample login credentials to access the free content.
> Iteration 2
-
In April/May 2023 the team decided to broaden the curriculum offering, and expand each curriculum section, known as a Module, to include multiple Lessons. The team presented to the Bainbridge Island School District, and were able to make the first curriculum sale.
-
I created categories to organize the curriculum posts, so each full Module, including all Lessons, could be accessed by clicking a category on the private page.
-
We also added additional website pages including Testimonials and Resources to broaden the website and provide more cotent to visitors.
> Iteration 3
-
In July 2023 we conducted user testing, elicited feedback, and made changes accordingly to the website.
> Iteration 4 - ongoing
-
In September 2023, the team decided that the whole curriculum needed to be expanded and overhauled, focusing on Lesson plans for teachers, activities that can be done in the classroom, and IRL (In Real Life) activities that students can do outside of the classroom.
-
I suggested at this point that we should switch to using LearnDash for all the online curriculum. It was early stages still in the amount of expanded content, and having used LearnDash with another ongoing client, I was already familiar with the software and found it to be quite robust and easy to use and implement with the DIVI Theme.
-
The team also realized that the expansion of content, along with another curriculum sale, necessitated my role changing to include more UX Design than originally in the scope of the project. We are now creating user flows, login instructions, and an overview of the curriculum for the user to reference (see below).

overview
In the beginning of the project, I re-invisioned their color schemes for the site and the modules using the rainbow present in their logo.

usability testing
Currently, we have only undergone one round of user testing.
Once the content is done being expanded, and we elicit feedback from our first round of users, we will continue to optimize the website and content accordingly.
lessons so far
From design ideation through to the usability study and beyond, I learned quite a bit on this project. I was able to further my skills in Illustrator and Axure, and through iterations of the design and prototype, came up with a final product, that loth ugh not perfect, is even better than I initailly envisioned. In the Design Process Report, I have listed out changes that I think could benefit the design even more, and added that more usability testing within the target market would be needed.
